DEBLICOM: Deaf-Blind Communication and Control Systems. Mid-Term Progress Report. Sept. 1, 1976 - Feb. 28, 1977.
Kafafian, Haig; Gouge, James
Described is the Deaf Blind Communications System (DEBLICOM), a somesensory coded information transfer system in which information is received cutaneously and transmitted kinesthetically. Reported is a pilot study done with 15 normal Ss (13- to 21-years-old) which compared communicative effectiveness of conventional temporal Morse code, spatial temporal Morse code and the dual input DEBLICOM code. Two styles of DEBLICOM interfaces are discussed: a touch-feel, portable, finger interface with nothing worn on or attached to the body of the deaf blind person and a body receive-only interface. Also explained are parts, materials and engineering aspects of the DEBLICOM system. (GW)
