Student and Youth Organizing, Second Edition. A Youth Liberation Pamphlet.
Schaller, Jon; And Others
This pamphlet for high school and college students explains group action techniques for organizing responses to unfair educational or community policies. Focus is on problems of the urban and suburban school student. It is designed to help students overcome problems of inexperience which can hamper sincere group expression. Seven chapters discuss specific aspects of organizing. Chapter one discusses how and why to plan a strategy before beginning to organize. Thorough knowledge of the issues is stressed. Various tactics outlined in Chapter two include building a power base (leafleting), threatening the people in power (picketing), and appealing to the good will of people (petitioning). Chapters three and four suggest ways of organizing small groups and student unions; and define needed skills such as fundraising, mimeographing, power structure research, using media, contacting lawyers, and running meetings. Selection of issues through student polling is discussed in Chapter five, followed by examples of issues based on ageism and sexism in Chapter six. Repression, apathy, transience, and racial and class divisions are among the problems reviewed in Chapter seven. To illustrate certain points, examples are drawn from successful and nonsuccessful student experiences. The pamphlet concludes with an annotated bibliography of 22 related books and magazines. (AV)
