Fall 1975 Entering Students Not Continuing in the Same Community College in Spring 1977. Student Flow Project, Report No. 25.
Hawaii Univ., Honolulu. Community Coll. System.
A survey was conducted of 763 students who were enrolled in Hawaii community colleges during the three semesters fall 1975 through fall 1976 but who were not enrolled in spring 1977, in order to obtain information on the activities and educational plans of these non-continuers, their reasons for non-continuance, and their evaluations of their community college experience. Analysis of questionnaire responses (47%) indicated: (1) the main reasons for non-continuance were unavailability of desired classes (19%), transfer to another college (18%), and work preference (16%); (2) 59% of the non-continuers were working at the time of the survey while 23% were attending another school; (3) 56% planned to continue their education in the fall of 1977 and 11% at some time after that; (4) respondents rated friendship with other students, instruction, and faculty/student relations most highly while the variety of courses available received the lowest rating. Significant differences in reasons for non-continuance were found for several student characteristics--program, educational objective, age, marital status, and current activity. Responses of the spring 1977 non-continuers were found to be quite similar to those of spring 1976 and fall 1976 non-continuers from the same fall 1975 entering group. (JDS)
