The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of classroom activities to enhance children's imaginations could improve their creative abilities. Subjects included 25 fifth-grade students in the Grand Forks, North Dakota, school district. Students were given the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking and were provided with materials designed to enhance imagination--primarily, records of such radio programs as "The Shadow" and "Suspense" and games drawn from the book "Put Your Mother on the Ceiling." Each week the titles of books chosen from the school library were recorded, and their content was classified according to the level of fantasy or reality. Four times during the semester, samples of the children's creative writing were analyzed for specific fantasy factors. Posttesting on the same measure of creativity revealed that, although imagination enhancement materials did not significantly affect verbal creativity scores, figural creativity scores, especially those reflecting fluency, were increased. Children's creative writing showed no increase in fantasy factors, but stories did become longer and were written less as narrative and more as dialogue. (Author/KS)
