Techniques are described which were used to develop and establish the Young Parents Program, a pilot project used to develop and expand the homebound instruction function of Norwalk Hospital by providing broadening family functioning type experiences to pregnant girls in the Norwalk, Connecticut, schools. The instructional objectives listed are (1) to develop an understanding of the relationship of foods to health, with special focus upon its effect upon maternal and infant well-being and growth patterns, (2) to demonstrate knowledge of skills which meet both personal and family functioning needs in the management of resources, and (3) to recognize the role in human development tasks of the child's first year and beyond. Focus in the description of procedures is on a core curriculum developed from materials obtained from a variety of sources (addresses for which are listed in the report), the needs analysis based on classroom observations and conferences with hospital staff, field testing of the curriculum materials in the hospital classroom, and a recommendation for a study to investigate the feasibility of an infant daycare program. Appended are the nutrition component (185 pages) and the child development component (123 pages) of the prototype curriculum, each of which includes several instructional units consisting of objectives, content, learning activities, and lists of resource materials.
