These reports deal with language as a whole: its nature, its history, its relationship to culture, its acquisition, the immediate uses to which it can be put, and the development in students of an appreciation for the ability to use a foreign language. The book is divided into three main sections: Acquisition, Application, and Appreciation. For each section a list is given of the members of the Northeast Conference working committee, the key propositions of the committee, followed by the reports themselves. The section on acquisition offers definitions of communication and language, applied linguistics and psycholinguistics. The section on application discusses language as communication, as an auxiliary skill, and for self-realization. The final section on language appreciation considers the aesthetic-cultural approach to language teaching and its pedagogical consequences. (CFM)
