Educational Plans and Career Choices of Bachelor's Degree Recipients in Indiana. Indiana College-Level Manpower Study Report Number 3.
Greenberg, Robert M.; Tully, Richard B.
Results of a questionnaire survey conducted in the spring of 1975 to determine the educational, occupational, and career plans of college seniors in Indiana immediately prior to their completion of work toward a bachelor's degree are presented. Graduates from the public institutions were found to be significantly older than those from the private institutions. The graduates' parents appeared to be of higher socioeconomic status and to have attained higher educational degrees than the general public, and nearly 25 percent of the graduates have interrupted their formal education for a significant period of time since the completion of high school. About 75 percent indicated plans for further education. Fewer than half of the graduates expected to be working in their career occupations the fall after graduation. One-quarter expected to be employed in non-career jobs then; five years hence, 78 percent expected to be employed in full-time career jobs. Differences were found in male and female expectations. The anticipated primary activity for the fall was related to the graduate's major field of study. Fewer than half of all the graduates reported having received occupational or career counseling.
