The seventh volume in a 10-volume report on the historical development (1966-1973) of the 8 administrative Area Offices of the Indian Health Service (IHS) Mental Health Programs, this report presents information on the Oklahoma City Area Office. Included in this document are: (1) General Description: Geography and Demography (population; geographic features; and historical development including the Trail of Tears and eastern tribal removals, the 100th meridian, statehood, contemporary Oklahoma, Kansas, and tribes associated with service units); (2) Development of Mental Health Services (non-reservation dilemmas, State services prior to 1969, planning for IHS, first psychiatric staff, Central Oklahoma Service Units, Western Oklahoma, Eastern Oklahoma, and Kansas Service Unit: reservations and Haskell College); (3) Development of Special Mental Health Positions (mental health educator, clerk as entry to mental health worker position); (4) Overview of Oklahoma City Area Mental Health Programs (Area Office; Service Unit staff and activities including stability of personnel, clinical services, and consultation relationships; staff training; and Indian Advisory Board relationships re: planning, coordination, and evaluation); (5) Summary (achievements and problems yet to be solved).
