A study was conducted to assess the relationship between the competencies taught in the Wisconsin Vocational-Technical and Adult Education system Airframe and Powerplant (A & P) Mechanics programs and the competencies actually needed on the job. Both A & P graduates and their employers were surveyed and asked to rate the relative job importance and school preparation for fifty competencies. Additionally, graduates were asked to evaluate the adequacy of the schools' instructional equipment. Results indicated: (1) there was general agreement between graduates and employers regarding competencies important to the A & P mechanic's job; (2) there was more agreement between graduates and employers regarding the areas of least adequate preparation than the areas of best preparation; (3) employers viewed the A & P mechanic's school preparation more positively than did the graduates; (4) graduates expressed a need for more practical experience and more training in A & P related areas while employers expressed a need for improved work attitudes; and (5) graduates tended to discount the value of courses not directly related to their mechanic's training. Recommendations were made for curricular revision to provide additional practical experience and to gear the program more directly to employers' needs.
