Burn Injuries: Causes, Consequences, Knowledge, Behaviors.
Healer, Cheryl V.; And Others
This report covers Phase I of the Burn Injury Education Demonstration Project, a four-phased project designed to explore the feasibility of using educational intervention strategies to increase knowledge and appropriate behaviors and attitudes to reduce the number and severity of burns. Phase I involved a comprehensive needs assessment conducted to determine the patterns of burn accidents, profiles of burn victims, and the current state of knowledge, deficits, and misconceptions with regard to the prevention and emergency treatment of burn injuries. Two major research activities are discussed: Collection of burn data and educational diagnosis Burn accident data are presented in two formats--(1) State Burn Incidence Data, derived solely from burn reports received from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and (2) Burn Victim Profile Data, derived from accident investigations and interviews with burn victims. The educational diagnosis data are based on the results of several instruments (a criterion-referenced test, a telephone survey, and home interviews) and are organized according to the nature and extent of knowledge, and the behavior and practices of the sample populations. Both burn incidence data and the results of the educational diagnosis are presented for six sample age groups: Children under 3 years of age and their parents, children aged 3 to 8, children aged 9 to 12, adolescents aged 13 to 19, adults aged 20 to 59, and elderly persons aged 60 and above.
