This teaching guide presents lessons for a social studies unit dealing with 18th century culture of the inhabitants of the Aleutian Islands. The unit is designed for intermediate and junior-high school students. Rather than providing a predigested picture of Aleut culture, the unit presents remaining evidence of that culture. Students reconstruct the culture by studying historical, anthropological, geographical, and archaeological evidence. This is examined for factual information, inherent biases due to source or method of obtaining the information, and an understanding of the types of information each discipline can provide. Throughout the unit, content is compared and related to students' own lives. Four lessons comprise the unit. In lesson one, focusing on the historical method, students read accounts of the arrival of the first Europeans through two different points of view, the Russian and the Aleut. In lesson two, emphasizing the geographical method, students use maps to study the geography of the Aleutian territory and investigate how the natural resources in that area influence life-style. Lesson three, stressing the anthropological method, provides a chart of an Aleut homesite showing important tools and their composition, giving clues about daily activities and trade. The fourth lesson provides several examples of Aleut folklore to show how it can give an indication of people's values and beliefs. Each lesson includes objectives, listings of materials, background information, and suggested activities. Two oversized maps, included at the back of the guide, are cut into regular page-size sheets.
