This report contains invited papers and comments from a conference on the status and problems of women in engineering. First, a discussion of research reveals that most women choose engineering as a field for college study late in their secondary education, depend heavily on external sources of support, and have attitudes and experiences different from male freshman engineers. Session two examines barriers to achievement--underrepresentation in class, lack of role models, male-oriented recruitment policies, and low salaries. Persistance and assertiveness are seen to be necessary to deal with these problems. Session three explores the isolation, frustration, and sacrifices experienced by women wanting both a career and family life. Laboratory and research skills are discussed in session four, along with a description of a basic lab-skills course at Cornell and a support program at Purdue to reduce attrition among women science students. Career choice implications and information systems available to women who are making career decisions are reviewed in session five. The two final sessions comment on experiences of women graduate engineering students and the need for society to accept women among its new engineers. (AV)
