This dissertation is a case study of the Van Riper-Hopper House Museum in Wayne Township, New Jersey. The study was undertaken to determine and to illustrate the kinds of educational contributions which local historical museums can make within their communities. Chapter one introduces the nature and scope of the study. A review of related literature in Chapter two reveals little evidence that museums have actually formulated educational programs in terms of continuing education needs and goals. Chapter three provides an overview of the house museum and its suburban community New Jersey setting. Chapter four describes a community assessment of the museum's educational effectiveness, limitations, and potential. Data analysis reveals that the museum is not an effective educational facility and that museum visits are isolated recreational and/or educational experiences. Chapter five presents a continuing education program model which describes educational activities which any museum can and/or adapt for four age groups: four to five year olds; seven to nine year olds; 14 to 16 year olds; and adults. The dissertation concludes by outlining its findings, recommendations, and implications for future research.
