Special Education Microteaching Clinic: Final Report.
Shea, Thomas M.; And Others
Presented is the final report on the Special Education Microteaching Clinic at Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville) which incorporates a practice teaching technique in which a student teaches a lesson, is critiqued and shown a videotape, then reteaches the lesson. Section I, the overview, includes a presentation of the Microteaching Clinic's purpose, objectives, and activities as originally proposed; and outlines the program's three phases--the training phase (which includes training special education department faculty and developing modeling tapes), application of the teach-reteach microteaching cycle, and evaluation of the prototype (including internal or microlesson evaluation, short term program evaluation, and long term program evaluation). A 3-year summary, Section II, covers such program activities as clinic staff and faculty training, modeling videotape production, application of microteaching at the university, project evaluation procedures and activities, personnel considerations, and dissemination activities. The final section deals with the analysis of data gathered in five areas of evaluation: the effect of viewing the modeling video tape prior to microteaching on trainee performance, trainees' evaluation of microteaching, teaching behavior of student-teachers who were assigned to microteaching during their training program, an opinionnaire survey of former microteaching trainees, and field testing the preliminary lesson modules. Noted among findings is that there is a slight instructional advantage in having a trainee view a modeling tape prior to teaching a lesson. (SB)
