Information is presented to aid the preprofessional and the professional physical educator, or any person who expects to plan and conduct physical education experiences, to activities that best meet the needs of the elementary school learner. Because the basic purpose of the physical education program is to help children become physically educated, the emphasis in this text is on the child. Chapter One introduces a teaching learning process based on the concept that the needs of learners should determine educational objectives. The subsequent sections of the text are based on the learning process discussed in Chapter One. They cover: description of physical characteristics of the learner; a taxonomy of objectives specifically designed for physical education; a discussion on writing instructional objectives, both behavioral and expressive; a description of movement experiences, including a bibliography; planning and selecting activities for a vertical curriculum; a discussion of teaching styles; tips for effective teaching; evaluating performance; and a discussion of current policies and issues in movement education. The appendixes contain an essay on sport and the principle of priority of man's needs, instructional procedures for fundamental skills, e.g., standing, running, etc., guidelines for using movement exploration to meet physical education objectives, methods for teachers to help children understand physical education concepts, and ways of organizing students into squads and other kinds of groups.
