Education and Community: A Radical Critique of Innovative Schooling.
Oliver, Donald W.
The major facets by which one views man in the community and the possible relationships between education and community are examined. The author senses a crisis of will in the education and helping professions due to a loss of faith in the liberal vision of a modern democratic society. Believing education must create balance between primitive and modern aspects of human community, systems of thought, and personality, he is concerned with both methodology and substance. An introduction, which discusses three modes of educational and social reform, presents the thesis that educators should exPend more energy for rebuilding communal settings rather than constantly attempting to reform or humanize corporate school settings. Arranged in four parts, the book (1) examines the ethical bases for analysis of educational and community; (2) studies various dimensions of quality of life; (3) explores applications of the concept of quality of life in terms of social forms, human diversity, and social change; and (4) offers comments on quality of life and education in communicatarian settings such as the kibbutz and learning communities. The author hopes that the book will provide a new conceptual basis for a social studies and humanities curriculum. (AV)
