The CBC and the Public: Management Decision Making in the English Television Service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, 1970-1974.
McKay, Bruce
A discussion of mass media studies, public broadcasting, and the relationship between public broadcasting and society provides the background for this study. Models for communication research study are examined to establish the methodology for the study of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). General background on Canadian public broadcasting is followed by a discussion of the role of the participant observer, the management decision making process, and CBC license renewal. A chapter on public issues reviews public consideration of the role and operation of the CBC and English Television during the study period. Following the examination of public issues is an analysis of public television in Canada, management decision making in CBC English Television, and communication research utilization. The report concludes with a summary of the main features of the study and an examination of the possible outcomes of some of the alternatives which have been suggested. (CH)
