The affective domain defines levels of behavior that pertain to feelings, emotions, attitudes, and values. The affective domain is important in the educational process because the way a child feels about himself as a learner may have a greater impact on his future development than his mastery of a particular skill or set of skills. Because the cognitive and affective development of a student are interwoven and interdependent to such an extent that one cannot be separated from the other, schools must routinely assess the affective domain. This booklet provides a brief taxonomy of levels of the affective domain, a discussion of various measurement techniques, and a discussion of the general considerations in the development of instruments for assessing the development of the affective domain. Specific procedures described in this manuscript should enable teachers, program staff, curriculum specialists, and the like to develop some satisfactory instrumentation that is appropriate for their needs. However, inhouse development should not preclude the use of other expert resources and consultants. One may want to purchase one of the commercially available instruments and amplify it with a locally designed instrument that takes cultural differences into consideration. (Author/IRT)
