The First National Sourcebook: A Guide to Correctional Vocational Training.
Ertle, Vicki; And Others
Intended for persons involved in planning and implementing prison vocational training programs, the guide contains detailed information on 66 inmate training programs throughout the country. Programs were selected for inclusion on the basis of meeting the following criteria: courses should be transportable or reproducible; have some unique features; have some evidence of effectiveness; and represent a variety of programs including minicourses, programs in maximum security prisons, and programs in outside training facilities. Information was obtained by telephone calls and questionnaires, with followup site visits and personal interviews when required. Programs in the guide are organized as follows: school and college, business and industry, trade union, professional and paraprofessional, new approaches in traditional courses, short-term and prevocational, and organizational methods. The summary outline for each program includes: job skills taught, course length, number of trainees, staff and cost requirements, descriptive and curriculum materials available, contact person(s), teaching and learning methods, implementation requirements, student selection methods, evaluation, supplementary services, and history and development. Appended is a list of the 32 institutions visited. A 15-page index provides access to the programs by State, name of program, and occupational area. (Author/RG)
