The purpose of this study was to identify differences, if any, which existed between black students who had attended desegregated schools as opposed to those students who had attended only segregated schools. The areas which were investigated were self perception, level of aspiration, tolerance of differences, awareness of moral and social issues, and awareness of human and civil rights. The 143 subjects in this study were all the male and female senior high school students who had attended four common elementary schools and were in either the desegregated senior high or the all black segregated senior high school selected. Students who were bused to desegregated schools for purposes of integration were found to differ from those students who had attended only segregated schools when compared on more than one scale. As the age of the students increased, there was a significant increase in the level of aspiration for the students in the desegregated school, but a corresponding and significant decrease in level of aspiration in the students in the segregated school. The students in the all black segregated high school showed more cultural independence than did the students in the desegregated school. (Author/JM)
