The nine essays in this monograph represent an expanded outgrowth of "The American Indian in Urban Society" (1971) and an attempt at improvement. The essays are titled as follows: (1) "Federal Policy and the Urban Indian" (Federal policy affecting the urbanization of Indian populations); (2) "Urbanization in a Reservation Community: The Hopi Indians of Moenkopi" (this Arizona pueblo is discussed in terms of the urban, economic, and political aspects of an agency town); (3) "Who Controls the Indians?: Social Manipulation in an Ethnic Enclave" (analysis of an Arizona company town where certain Papagos were granted political powers over their fellow Indians by the company); (4) "Interaction and Adaptation Among Small City Chippewa" (the relationship between individual variations and the differences in personal social networks among Minnesota Chippewa); (5) "The Chicago American Indian Center: Two Decades" (concept development, organizational history, and program development); (6) "The Indians of New York City" (focuses on the Mohawks); (7) "Compartmentalization as a Factor in Urban Adjustment: The Kiowa Case" (San Francisco Bay Area); (8) "Kinship, Friendship, and Enclave: The Problem of American Indian Urbanization" (the social networks of Navajo-Denver migrants); (9) "Transplanting and Revitalizing of Indian Cultures in the City" (a Navajo-Kiowa comparison).
