Library Technical Assistants (LTA's) were the subject of a study designed to focus on four areas: (1) the present status of formal LTA training programs, (2) the present and potential job market, (3) the duties which LTA's perform, and (4) the attitude of the professional librarian toward the LTA. Data were collected from two sources--catalogs of schools offering LTA training programs and a survey questionnaire mailed to public, academic, and special libraries as well as to boards of education. The study was limited to the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Three major problems were found by the study. First was the inability of existing curricula to focus on the support role of the LTA. Second was a definite need for a strict delineation of duties for professional, paraprofessional, and clerical personnel. These two problems led to the third, which was the fear that LTA's would be hired to replace professional librarians. The involvement of American Library Association-accredited library schools in LTA training programs could help solve some of these problems.
