As part of the Thirteen-College Curriculum Program (TCCP), this teacher's manual contains background material and teaching suggestions for a sophomore-level course in humanities for predominately black colleges. The objective of the course is to train students to appreciate the arts, view art as one of the few channels through which men still succeed in their quest for spiritual identity, and involve them with the substance of the medium under consideration. The five units in the first section move from very basic activities in the development of sense perception to the development of perception and skills in the graphic arts, literature, music, dance, and drama. Section 2 provides teacher background information in order to guide students in the study of occultism, mysticism, and magic. Section 3 focuses on two of man's interpretations of experience through which the universe is revealed to us. The first interpretation deals with mythological man--the revelation of heroes, gods, and God in whom is represented the spiritual ideal. The second interpretation deals with man as protester--as he manifests discontent about the unfulfilling political, social, psychological, moral, or religious order in which he finds himself captive. Section 4 provides excerpts from teachers on how they have used these materials and approaches. (Author/DE)
