These resource papers encourage the student to discover for himself the contributions to a problem made through original literature. Since some of the papers are controversial or contradict other papers, the student will need to evaluate them to determine his position. It is hoped that these papers will also foster an appreciation of the work of the scientists involved. This publication begins with an article that defines solid waste and explains some misunderstandings about what constitutes a pollutant. The next article reviews the current status of treatment and disposal, and the third presents some of the problems involved in solid waste management. These are followed by nine papers that examine the reclaiming and recycling of various kinds of wastes. The final three papers deal with energy use. The first describes efforts to conserve energy while disposing of garbage; the next two discuss aspects of energy and recycling. (LS)
