The Price of Progress. (Student Resource Book II in the Investigating Your Environment Program).
Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, Boulder, CO.
These resource papers encourage the student to discover for himself the contributions to a problem made through original literature. Since some of the papers are controversial or contradict others, the student will need to evaluate these papers to determine his correct approach or position. It is hoped that these papers will also foster an appreciation of the work of the scientists involved. The publication begins by indicating that the price of the future may well be found in the things we must give up to get the things we want. Next, the changes that must take place if man is to live in his limited world are listed. Following this is an evaluation of the new technologies and their effects on the environment. The next four papers describe the effects of the changes that may be required due to limited resources. The document ends with a pointed essay explaining that most businesses adopt pollution controls only when it becomes good business to do so. (LS)
