These resource papers encourage the student to discover for himself the contributions to a problem made through original literature. Since some of the papers are controversial or contradict others, the student will need to evaluate these papers to determine his correct approach or position. It is hoped that these papers will also foster an appreciation of the work of the scientists involved. The first several selections include an American Indian's evaluation of nature and man's place in it, a description of ecological relationships, and a consideration of the historical and cultural roots of the environmental crisis. The next selections examine man's future needs and the effects of overcrowding on a mouse population. The next two papers offer an introduction to the current problems of pollution, while the following two readings explore the effect of a growing population on environmental deterioration. A study of global pollution is summarized in the next selection, while the following paper illustrates that sould judgment will be needed to face world problems. The final paper is a report on the first United Nations conference on the environment. (LS)
