Preliminary Analysis of the Social Service Occupations; Interim Report.
Munoz, Faye U.; Goldsmith, Katherine L.
The document summarizes preliminary research findings of the Allied Health Professions Projects regarding social service entry workers in health care services. Preliminary findings suggest job descriptions, task assignments, and training requirements and provide a framework for the project's main objective of developing instructional materials and curricula to teach job skills. Following an overview of the project, discussions of manpower problems in social work and the emergence of new careers are presented. A selected panel of social workers and the Advisory committee identified and rated tasks, skills and knowledges in terms of: critically, cognitive level, and human interaction; and job levels. Two sub-committees examined ways of differentiating and delineating tasks for the entry-level and two-year college workers and defined the knowledges, skills, and attributes of those tasks. A conceptual model for a career "lattice" for entry-level workers is presented. Results from a national survey are expected to modify present findings. Appended material takes up half the document and includes: committee and sub-committee members list; the social service occupations function list; definition of the rating scales; categorization of level one tasks; and a list of facilities participating in the survey.
