Secondary Student Attitudes and Satisfaction With School.
Pontiac City School District, MI.
Measures of student satisfaction and other variables which are related to student reaction to their school are built into the design of this study, which hypothesizes that satisfaction will represent the students' global response to the learning environment, and that in turn, this global response will be related to certain performance characteristics. This report represents the first stage in the isolation of factors that influence satisfaction and presents a description of the indicator of student satisfaction with a listing and a brief description of the relationship between satisfaction and a set of selected variables from the survey. In general, secondary students appear to be satisfied with the structure and personnel of their schools. However, student participation in school is limited to classroom activities and students are generally powerless to change important aspects of the schools. In the area of race relations and busing, students do not perceive racial discrimination in their schools and are supportive of school and neighborhood integration. In conclusion, secondary students appear to be happy with their situation and identify areas where there should be improvement. The appendix summarizes the correlations of the various items with the measure of school satisfaction and presents a racial breakdown. (Author/AM)
