Based on an analysis of existing data, manpower projections in the area of social services have been made to 1980 and are presented in the document. Methodology, data sources, and study limitiations are discussed and the historical growth of social service personnel examined. Differences in classification of social service workers from program to program have made employment growth difficult to compare, but program expansion has led to a large numerical increase in their employment, and labor force comparisons concur. In 1970 welfare services and residential welfare services employed 64% of all social service personnel, and health services and educational services employed nearly 19%. Changes in educational attainment are noted, with a large increase in the number of social service personnel with just a bachelor's degree, in 1970. Three forecasts for social service employment are presented, with employment growth indicated, although not as great as in the 1960's. There is a strong basis for continued expansion in both baccalaureate and master's degree social work education. It is stated that estimations and projections are conservative due to the limitations of available data and the high state of uncertainty regarding Federal policy in this field. (LH)
