The focus of this newsletter is on the findings of a two-year nationwide study of adolescent girls. The study undertook to identify the wide variety of needs, aspirations, and concerns of young women 12- to 18-years old. Nine hundred and twenty women were interviewed in both rural and urban settings, representing a wide range of racial, religious, and ethnic group and socioeconomic backgrounds. One-third of the women were adjudicated delinquent, one-third were active in youth organizations, and one-third fell into neither category. The study analyzed the girls' beliefs and feelings on life goals, marriage, children, sex, careers, relationship to adults, permissiveness, peers, drugs and alcohol, youth organizations, school, and social and political involvements. In addition, Dr. Gisela Konopka, the author of this study, is interviewed. She outlines ways of meeting needs of young girls; for example, one way to meet their needs is to enhance their self-esteem through participation in decision making.
