Within the context of family and school, students in primary grades are encouraged to deal with an expanded idea of self. The learning experiences in the teacher's guide are designed to help this self become aware of its involvement in an institution called family, and of many different roles played by family members to achieve a variety of goals. Interdependency and responsibility are explored. These basic concepts are then applied to another familiar institution--the school. The concept of occupational roles is carefully developed. The topics covered include: family structure and activities performed at the home, interrelationships of family functions, interdependency and responsibility in the family, role performance in the home, family members and their jobs, living in a school, children in a school, school functions and occupational roles, and interdependency and responsibility in the school. Subject areas for which the materials in the guide have potential are social studies and language arts. Each set of learning experiences contains a student objective, set overview, resource list, teacher-preparation tasks, learning activities, and suggestions for evaluation-summary activities.
