In the summer of 1972, selected experts on Mexican American affairs attended a conference at Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies in Colorado. Sponsored by the Weatherhead Foundation, the conference dealt with the educational and economic perspectives of the Mexican Americans in the Southwest. The conference's objective was to convert the papers submitted into a book--after each manuscript had been discussed, debated, and finally polished against this give-and-take. These papers are: 1) "Introduction: A People on the Move"; 2) "The Neglected Chapters in Mexican American History"; 3) "Mexican Immigration"; 4) "The Economic Condition of the Mexican American"; 5) "Educational Challenges in Elementary and Secondary Schools"; 6) "Higher Education and the Mexican American"; and 7) "A Perspective on Mexican Organizations". Topics covered are: the scope, diversity, history, and present plight of the Mexican American community; Mexican immigration; the Mexican American's current economic condition and education; and what Mexican Americans have been doing through their own organizations.
