The assessment of the development of preschool and primary grade children has assumed greater importance in recent years with the emphasis on compensatory education programs. While the assessment of cognitive development has received the primary thrust of research efforts thus far, most child experts would agree that the child's affective development is of equal importance to his total well-being. The Purdue Social Attitudes Scale (PSAS) focuses on the latter. Research programs have been developed to determine the validity and reliability of this scale. The test booklets contain cartoon-type picture stories. The examiner reads the legend under each picture to the child. The child then selects the face which he thinks properly completes each story and places a pencil-mark in the box under that face. (Author/BJG)
