Hartford Moves Ahead: An Evaluative Report. Headstart Child Development 1973-1974.
Hartford Public Schools, CT.
This evaluative report of a Head Start program discusses gains in academic achievement and social development of 248 preschool children as measured by standardized tests, parent questionnaires, and staff surveys. A pre- and postadministration of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) was used as a basis for the measurement of student gains (both an English and Spanish version were administered). A parent questionnaire and staff survey focused on: (1) the main target areas of pupil changes (conceptual and verbal skills, emotional and social development); and (2) the degree of parent involvement in the program. Based on the information collected and analyzed, the evaluation shows that the program has substantially met its stated goals: significant gains were made in language development and parents and staff members were highly supportive of the program. An independent, on-going longitudinal study of the program collaborates the results of this evaluative report and is contained in the appendix. (CS)
