The articles included here tackle the difficult and necessary job of illustrating how to teach more effectively, how to enhance student learning, how to make instruction more efficient, how to make schooling more pertinent to the real lives of students--and thus, how to motivate them and engage them fully in their own development. Topics discussed include: the general institutional framework and attitudes needed to stimulate instructional changes; learning resources centers and how faculty members can use them; innovative methods of teaching psychology; effective methods of using literature in freshman composition and of involving students in poetry; the present status of history and the liberal arts in community colleges; an effective tutorial method of teaching freshman composition without literature; and how student and faculty evaluations can be used as positive reinforcement to improve instruction.
