Complication of Rank-in-Class by Secondary Schools. ERS Information Aid.
Bushey, Julia A.
The information presented in this report was drawn from a 1973-74 school year survey of school programs and administrative practices that was mailed to all 567 school systems enrolling 12,000 or more pupils and to a stratified random sample of 702 systems enrolling 300 to 11,999 pupils. After reporting that the overwhelming majority of the reporting school systems continue to compile rank-in-class lists for their grade-12 students, the report examines the uses of rank-in-class lists, the trends in high schools that affect such lists, and the numerous criticisms of the lists. It then provides extensive coverage of the methods various schools use in computing rank-in-class figures. The paper ends with 15 guidelines for computing rank-in-class. (Author/IRT)
