This book presents a spectrum of the environmental design and research issues of today, an introduction to the field as a whole, and an emphasis on the need for changes in attitudes and procedures in the disciplines. Contributions, multidisciplinary in approach, range from a diversity of perspectives, including urban planning, social and behavioral ecology, environmental cognition, behavioral factors, design methods, and architectural theory. The theme of the conference, "Design and Research in Response to Social Change," is established by three authorities: Hans Blumenfeld introduces "The Changing Urban Environment of North America," Kevin Lynch presents "Grounds for Utopia," and Constance Perin develops the topic, "Social Governance and Environmental Design." Five short commentaries follow the theme papers. Part 1, Design Thinking and Methods, includes "Function and Symbolism in Architecture" by Geoffrey H. Broadbent. The second section, Problems in Human-Environment Research, includes contributions from Amos Rapoport and Paul V. Gump. The final set of reflections, Some Strategies for Change, features papers with a view to the future. (Author/MLF)
