This is a discussion of the new American Psychological Association guideline to "Ethical Principles in the Conduct of Research with Human Participants" (1973) as applied to the study of natural groups in both the field and laboratory. Presented is a resume of some of the problems and solutions as they were encountered and resolved. Among the problems discussed are: (1) the use of privileged information, (2) the possibility of harming experimental subjects, and (3) disclosure to subjects of experimental objectives and results. The issue of confidentiality is also mentioned with an emphasis on the problems this requirement creates for the researcher. The author concludes that the new ethical guidelines have neither crippled nor greatly helped those conducting research with human subjects. Generally, the guidelines remind the researcher to proceed with caution and consider all aspects of working with human subjects. However, this should not interfere with the development of new research techniques and methodologies. (Author/BW)
