Partners in Urban Education: Getting it Together at Home.
Howell, Barbara Thompson
This handbook, written for the parents of a school-age child, is organized into an "Introduction" and five chapters. The purpose of the handbook is to help the parent get their child a good education by providing ideas about working with the child, with his teachers, and with other parents as well as using the home and community to help the child learn. Chapter 1, "Your Child and His Home," deals with such topics as the reasons for school attendance, the difference that education can make in the childs' future, talking with the child, setting up rules for the child, homework, work at home, punctuality, the importance of good health, television, and the child as a person. Chapter 2, "Your Child and His School," covers such issues as school visitations, the report card, meetings with the teacher and the principal, and working with the school-community coordinator and the Board of Education. Chapter 3, "Your Child and His Community," discusses how the parent can help his or her child to explore his or her community. Chapter 4, "You and Your Child," focuses in particular on how a parent should relate to his or her child in order to promote the child's education, particularly his adjustment to school. Chapter 5 specifies "Learning Materials to Keep at Home." (Author/JM)
