This book describes the evolution of philosophy and practice in school health education in the United States. It is divided into 12 chapters. Chapter 1 briefly traces the evolutionary development of the field. Chapter 2 gives a chronological review of significant major movements. Chapter 3 focuses on the two curriculum problems of (a) what to teach, and (b) how to best organize curriculum for effective learning. Chapter 4 discusses the availability of literature and materials for health education, both past and current. Chapter 5 examines research and experimentation. Chapter 6 discusses health-related activities of organizations and agencies which have contributed to progress in health education. Chapter 7 presents a brief analysis of evolving methodology and philosophy. Chapter 8 describes significant proceedings and recommendations of conferences related to health education. Chapter 9 discusses health programs developed in colleges and universities. Chapter 10 deals with teacher preparation in health education. Chapter 11 discusses the most important international developments in health education. Chapter 12 summarizes factors which have influenced school health education, in order to discover prominent trends which can provide future direction. (PB)
