With the advent of the informal or open classroom, a new area of concern has become important--classroom arrangement. In the past, classrooms were oriented toward the front, toward the teacher's desk and the blackboard. Education depended mainly on the pupil's interaction with the teacher and with printed materials. Nowadays, in informal classrooms, an environment is needed in which children learn not only from the teacher and from books but also from various materials and from each other. This creates a new and complicated problem for the classroom teacher, who usually has the same old room and much the same old furniture to deal with. This book is an attempt to shed some light on the problem of classroom arrangement, to indicate possibilities for the use of space, and, particularly, to describe in practical terms how one might proceed to rearrange a classroom while allowing for wide differences in the basic considerations--teacher-style, pupil-style, and the givens of the room and furniture.
