This study attempted to understand and define the concepts of creativity and self-actualization and to ascertain, first, if creative people are highly self-actualized, and second, if self-actualized people are highly creative. Four tests (Personal Orientation Inventory, Torrence Tests of Creative Thinking, Similes Preference Inventory, Lafferty's Life Style Checklist) were administered and data collected on 177 graduate and undergraduate students. Results showed a positive, statistically significant correlation between originality and elaboration on the TTCT and between the POI self-actualization scale and the Human Synergistic Life Styles self-actualization scale. However, there were no correlations between either of the two creativity measures or either of the two self-actualization measures. While the data suggest that highly creative people may be more self-actualized and that highly self-actualized people may be more creative, these hypotheses are not measured in the study. (Author/PC)
