Organizational Development in Urban School Systems.
Derr, C. Brooklyn, Ed.
This collection of articles indicates much about the state of organization development (OD) and its application to education. Organization development, as an intervention theory and method, is an iterative process including six sequences of events: entry, data collection, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, and withdrawal. The articles included follow the sequence of OD events. Derr and Demb write about the entry phase. The Gabarro article is especially useful because of its emphasis on diagnosis. Gabarro also emphasizes structural as well as procedural interventions, whereas many of the other articles are more concerned about questions of process. The essay by Blake and Mouton is about intervention. The articles by Schmuck and Blumberg et al. follow to illustrate possible interventions relevant to innercity schools. Gabarro, Blumbert, et al., and Schmuck all report empirical findings which might prove insightful to demonstrate the data collection phase in the OD sequence. Hornstein serves as the critic for this edition. The article by Joe E. Gentry and J. Foster Watkins presents findings on the impact of OD training for improving race relations. The Shedd et al. article describes the limited utility of organization development, and how it was and should be combined with other innovative programs to improve leadership in a big-city school system.
