Systems in teaching and learning are discussed in depth to aid in relating educational theories to the art of teaching. Chapter 1, on individualization of instruction, discusses research in the learning process. Chapter 2, on systems and the systems approach, reviews the meaning of "system," systems analysis and synthesis, and the use of a systems approach in developing instructional materials. Chapter 3, on defining the purposes of an instructional system, reviews goal setting, the form of instructional goals specifying goals and objectives, goal-analysis procedures, other analyses, procedural steps in identifying instructional objectives, establishing competency level or terminal-performance criteria, and additional aids in preparing instructional objectives. Chapter 4, on preparation of self-instructional material, discusses criteria to select from alternative models, design of instructional systems, and production of learning and other materials. Chapters 5 and 6 present means of implementing the instructional system and of evaluating system effectiveness. (MJM)
