The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Teaching Language Arts.
Mountain, Lee Harrison
Espousing the experience approach to teaching children language arts and a competency based approach to teacher education, this book can be used in methods courses as a workbook, during student teaching as a manual, and while teaching as a sourcebook for experiences that children enjoy. The chapters are designed as modules and cover eight language arts areas: listening, speaking, creative expression, communication, handwriting, spelling, composition, and linguistics. Each module begins with a section on assessment of objectives which includes a set of questions detailing the objectives of the experiences. The questions can be used as a pretest and posttest for the module. Six or seven experiences are included in each chapter. The first four experiences always deal with self-assessment, self-improvement, instructional materials, and instructional methods. The remaining experiences offer additional approaches to self-improvement, materials, and methods. Many of the experiences include an application with children which offers suggestions for adapting the experience with a child, a group, or a whole class. (TO)
