Not for Bread Alone: An Appreciation of Job Enrichment.
Taylor, Linda King
Bridging the gap between theory and practice, the author through a case-study approach of industries in the United Kingdom and Europe has identified motivation techniques resulting in job enrichment. The book is written in the belief that work is more efficient when it is enjoyable and that human beings will become obsolete unless allowed to broaden themselves. Introductory chapters discuss the relationship of motivation and human needs, particularly psychological needs. The remainder of the book concerns nine case studies of industrial management in the fields of printing and publishing, oil refining, garment and textiles, power supply and service, and automotive manufacturing. Case studies show how various companies have translated generalizations of motivation into specifics relating to everyday work, how incentives are offered that incite employees to want to do better, and how paramount communication and understanding are in the field of job enrichment. The process by which a decision is reached becomes as important in making changes as the quality of the decision. Situations which employees find most satisfying and rewarding are those which provide: sense of achievement; variety, creativity, and challenge in the work itself; some act of recognition and appraisal; authority and responsibility; growth advancement, and self-development.
