Offering an overview of the adult education program of Quitman County, Mississippi and its development from 1967 to 1969, the report reviews the history of the community-based project, community problems, resident participation, and project objectives. Begun in 1967 as a volunteer program in adult education for the poor of that rural Delta region, the program grew and ultimately became a Federally sponsored project with eight continuing education centers. Those served by the program were 63 percent black, most with annual incomes of less than $1000 per year, and functionally illiterate. Through the Community Extension Service, an outgrowth of Mary Holmes Junior College commitment to community service, the Quitman Project grew into a more formalized and regulated program. In the appendix, a progress report submitted to Mary Holmes Junior College describes a curriculum workshop, preservice teacher training, experimental activities, and a project evaluation.
