Proposals for Library Development in Kansas. Testimony at the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science Mountain Plains Regional Hearing, September 18, 1974, Denver, Colorado.
Kansas State Library, Topeka.
A state-wide library network was proposed for Kansas to improve library service throughout the state. A regional system of library service was established in 1965, but services and financial support have not been evenly applied to the total state population. In order to provide library and reference service to even the most isolated residents, a system has been proposed for channeling requests from the local level to the appropriate county, regional, state, or even out-of-state source. This would require state and federal funding for personnel training, an interlibrary loan network, union catalogs, reference services, production of media, adult education, development of resources, and public relations. A $1.50 per capita state/federal grant to support these functions has been suggested, with coordination of the network programs at the state level. Maps showing existing cooperative library and information service efforts are included. (LS)
