The Fairfax County Library converted from a card catalog to a book catalog format in 1963. The first book catalogs were produced by the Sequential Card (SC) process. The master cards were prepared by the library and sent to Science Press, where copy was prepared on IBM cards, coded for sequential filing, and photographed to prepare page plates, resulting in separate author, title and subject catalogs. By 1969, however, the enormous growth of the county's library collection had made the SC system unworkable. In cooperation with the Northern Virginia Community College, the county initiated its first computer-produced book catalog, joining the public and academic library collections in one catalog. In 1971, the COMBO 1971 project began, converting the entire Fairfax catalog from SC to computer. An additional change was made with the creation of a Names catalog, combining works by and about an author in one listing. Sample catalog pages illustrate this overview of the Fairfax County library's book production methods. An additional description is provided of the methods of book catalog production used by the Suburban Washington Library Film Service (SWLFS). (SL)
