Two surveys--one of adult blacks from a Texas city of 160,000 people and the other of black high school students in three Southern cities--which investigated mass media use and development of racial and political attitudes among blacks are reported in this paper. Some of the objectives of the surveys were to investigate mass media use, particularly exposure to black oriented media; to investigate racial and political attitudes; and to determine what relationships exist among mass media use, conventional militancy, and black nationalism. Results indicated that: (1) both groups were moderately to heavily exposed to mass media with the young respondents reporting heavier exposure; (2) conventional militancy was a unidimensional concept for adults; (3) both groups reported higher agreement with black nationalist goals than samples in an earlier study; (4) mass media may be performing a socialization function; (5) black nationalists may be more violence prone; (6) there was a relatively substantial number of black nationalists among high school students; and (7) mass media was a suppressor of black nationalism.
